don't listen to the 'experts'
I teach a high school Zumba class every Wednesday afternoon. It's at my old high school, so I really relate to the girls there. Last week, however I realised that to them,
I am probably a random dance teacher who they don't relate to at all. I decided to tell them a little about me at the end of class, after a short meditation.
After we had all relaxed out of our minds and in to our bodies, I told them that when I was in intermediate school, I was rejected for the dance group 2 years in a row. My mum even called the dance teacher to try and get me in, but no luck. After having spent my whole childhood choreographing routines to every song on the radio, I took this “expert opinion" to heart and really believed that I couldn’t dance.
Fast forward 7 years of no dancing. I was a university student and decided to take the leap back to dancing again. I would try Salsa, a completely new dance to me. I was afraid of failing again, but my desire to dance was stronger than my fear. Walking in to that dance studio really felt like home to me. After the first class, I felt so alive again. That one decision to go back and dance changed the direction of my life forever...
My Salsa teacher and I fell in love, got married in Peru, and had a beautiful son.
We have a Latin dance studio in town, and I teach Zumba, and show children how to dance. I let the "expert" tell me I couldn't do what I loved for 7 years - that was long enough. If I hadn't gone back to dance, I would've spent the rest of my life believing that I wasn't good enough.
After I told the girls this story and we finished the class, several of them came up and told me of times they had been told they didn't fit the model of an activity they wanted to do.
If anyone has ever told YOU that you can’t do something - you're too old, too young, too uncoordinated, too short, too whatever... and you believed them, it's time to look again.
Letting others tell you that your dreams can’t become your reality is giving them permission to squash your dreams. Don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t do anything. You can do anything that you want. It's time to start.
What are you putting off doing because someone told you that you can't do it? I'd love to hear about it in the comments below!
